What is soul? asked Ben E King back in '67. It's a question that's largely remained unanswered. Why? Because it's nigh on impossible to quantify soulfulness?
I mean, is soul all about rhythm? Not quite. Is soul about a certain righteousness that barks back to the genre's gospel roots? Possibly. Is soul all about naked emotion? Most definitely.
