Two months ago, Uncut presented a 15-track selection of the best of the year's music to date. This month our free CD concentrates on the pick of 2004's releases in the field now dubbed "Americana".
Inevitably, there were albums represented on the previous CD that could have qualified for inclusion here, but we resisted the temptation to include further tracks from these records in favour of new sounds. We made just one exception, and you will find the magnificent Richmond Fontaine represented on both CDs.
Their Post To Wire is certain to be near the top of our best-of-2004 list. lt's also revived interest in their back catalogue, with the imminent release of the band's previous album, Winnemucca.
Elsewhere, exclusive tracks from forthcoming albums by American Music Club and Giant Sand sit alongside such thrilling newcomers as The National and Iron & Wine.
You will find singer-songwriters such as Ben Weaver alongside bands such as Explosions In The Sky, and the well-known such as Jay Farrar alongside the still obscure, such as Charlemagne.
So what is Americana? lt's a question we're frequentiy asked. Our best response is to suggest that you simply take a listen to this compilation. You will get 15 different answers, for the only factor that unites the artists heard here is that they are all mavericks following their own musical visions.
