By the time The Sex Pistols US tour collapsed in San Francisco in January 1978
punk's initial energy and idealism had dissipated. In its place stood two
very different schools of thought. The f irst consisted of a more aggressive,
basic and streetwise approach to the genre. The second saw some of the scene's
initial participants seeking to recapture the sense of adventure and excitement
generated by punk two years earlier. This collection is an exploration of
this latter liberationist mindset - a mindset that draws on the DIY spirit
of punk witbout being confined by its reductive limitations.
Indeed, it's this spirit that has been resurrected by a new generation of post-punk
acts over the last four years. Hence the likes of The Futureheads, Death From Above
1979, Bird Blobs and Radio 4 have been included on this compilation alongside
instigators like Siouxsie And The Banshees, Essential Logic and The Fail.
As such, this collection is a celebration of angular musie alive to the possibilities
offered up by punk during the last 30 years. This is music that is unafraid of
being naïve, unashamed of being progressive and unbound by musicianship. This is
music that challenges. Music that journeys Beyond Punk!
