UNCUT

Editor’s Letter
We were about to sign off an entirely different issue when we heard that Syd Barrett had died. There was no lurid drama in his dying - he wasn't gunned down like Lennon, or blown away by his own hand like Kurt Cobain - but his loss is as keenly felt and the news stopped us, as they say, in our tracks.

Syd had not made a record in the lifetime of some Uncut readers, who may be baffled by the significance to some of us his death. But the impact he made in 1967, when his musical genius was matched only by what The Beatles and Hendrix were doing, is simply unforgettable, the stuff of legend and the talent so vast its sad his passing overshadows much else I would otherwise be talking about here, including the new Dylan record. That's how great yd was and why this issue is dedicated to him.
