Editor’s Letter
Uncut’s 50 Best Gigs isn’t an attempt to compile the definitive list of the greatest gigs ever – what a daunting and thankless task that would eventually be. No, what we have here is a list of the greatest shows that between us – Uncut staff, that is, plus regular contributors and some of our favourite bands – we have seen, that in many cases changed our lives, gigs at which we were eyewitness and about which we can say, "We were there!"
Who to choose, though, from Jimi, the Stones, a ton of Dylan shows, none of them ever the same, The Who in 1969 at their first UK show after Woodstock, Judee Sill at Bristol Colston hall, Bowie on the Ziggy tour, perhaps the shows I’d most like to see again, The Clash at the 100 Club, the Pistols on their Jubilee boat trip, R.E.M. making their London debut in front of 40 people at Dingwall’s, The Stone Roses at the ICA, Pearl Jam at the Borderline…
